This article was very interesting, and I am involved in discussions and venting sessions all the time with colleagues of mine who decry the increasing focus on students as consumers instead of students. Many of my teaching colleagues are irritated by what they see as a push by the high levels of administration at our institution (and others) that contribute to this idea and discourse. In order to compete with other institutions for students, it seems that showing how an institution delivers its services cheaply, efficiently, and conveniently for students-as-consumers has become commonplace in academic discourse–especially at the administrative levels. Thanks for posting it.
